NEAT was founded in 2004 by retail entrepreneur Andrew Livingston in an abandoned dry-cleaning factory on Davenport Road in Toronto. Working with the idea that people who were picking up dry-cleaning would want to buy clothing hangers, Andrew set up shop next to Careful Hand Laundry in a temporary location.  After a fair amount of trial and error, Andrew quickly realized that people wanted well-designed, contemporary homewares from around the world. He therefore set out to build a business around this idea.
